2D Animation Reel

In 2020 when the world went into lockdown. That year I set a goal for myself to create one full minute of 2D animation. The reel above is the result.

All animation, background art, shading and effects were done by myself.

The background art for these pieces was as much fun to create as the animations. It gave me the chance to explore some major television series styles and really study them for these explorations.

Recognize this one?
Hey Arnold!

The art direction in this series launched an entire animated universe and is still awe inspiring to this day. I’ve always wondered why they let the Art Deco designs make many of their background so minimalist.

Batman the Animated Series

Mobile Gaming isn’t going anywhere! This billion-dollar annual industry has generated an art style all its own over the years. I really had a lot of fun rendering this scene, especially the cloud shapes.

I love it when movies add easter eggs in the background to theme a place and to create subtle visual gags. The Tavern this frog walks out of it called the “Bar Fly” get it? I also like within this one shot showing the castle far off in the distance, overlooking the lonely streets.

Disney Background Art

This background art is the least visible from the demo reel above. I wanted to create a sprawling scene the character would move through for an action running sequence. Factories are always a location movies and TV shows explore. I don’t think many artists can render one of these places just out of their head. References are king!
